Joseph
Addison (1672

Soon
as the evening shades prevail, The
moon takes up the wondrous tale, And
nightly to the listening earth, Repeats
the story of her birth. Whilst
all the stars that round her burn, And
all the planets, in their turn, Conform
the tidings as they roll, And
spread the truth from pole to pole. The Spectator, 465, OdeAlso:
Thus I live in the world rather as a spectator of mankind than as one of the species.
The Spectator, 1
Eugéne
Ionesco (1912
- 1994):
There
are more dead people than living. And
their numbers are increasing. The
living are getting rarer. Rhinoceros, II
Thomas
Jefferson (1743
- 1826):
We
hold these truths to be sacred and undeniable; that all men are created equal
and independent, that from that equal creation they derive rights inherent and
inalienable, among which are the preservation of life, and liberty, and the
pursuit of happiness. Original draft for the American Declaration of Independence
Arthur
Koestler (1905
- 1983):
A
writer’s ambition should be to trade a hundred contemporary readers for ten
readers in ten year’s time and for one reader in a hundred year’s time. Interview with Harvey Breit in the New York Times Book Review, 1 Apr 1951
Charles
Lamb (1735
- 1834):
I
am, in plainer words, a bundle of prejudices – made up of likings and
dislikings. Essays of Elia, “Imperfect Sympathies”
Also: We
are nothing, less than nothing, and dreams.
We are only what might have been, and must wait upon the tedious shores
of Lethe millions of ages before we have existence, and a name.

you steal from one author its plagiarism. If
you steal from many it’s research. Quoted in A. Johnston, The Legendary Mizers, Ch. 4. Also attr. To Jimmy Durante
Lord Gordon George Byron (1788 - 1824): So,
we’ll go no more a roving, So
late into the night, Though
the heart be still as loving, And
the moon be still as bright. For
the sword outwears its sheath, And
the soul wears out the breast, And
the heart must pause to breathe, And
love itself have rest. Though
the night was made for loving, And
the day returns too soon, Yet
we’ll go no more a roving, By
the light of the moon. So,
we’ll go no more a roving,
