Demonology and Witchcraft - “Less we forget”

Ludwig Lavater was an early influential Swiss Reformed theologian, a prolific author who penned numerous homilies and commentaries on the Scriptures, a survey of the liturgical practices for the Zurich church, a history of the Lord’s Supper controversy, as well as biographies of father-in-law Heinrich Bullinger, and Konrad Pellikan (a German Protestant theologian, humanist, Protestant reformer and Christian Hebraist, (a scholar of Hebrew who comes from a Christian family background/belief, or is a Jewish adherent of Christianity), who worked chiefly in Switzerland).  His most famous book was about ghosts “De spectris, lemuribus et magnis atque insolitis fragoribus” (first published in 1569 and re-published in English as “Of ghostes and spirites walking by nyght” in 1572), and became one of the most frequently printed demonological works of the early modern period with at least nineteen editions published in German, Latin, French, English and Italian.

Ludwig Lavater was born on the 04th March 1527 at Kyburg Castle in Zurich, the son of the Zurich governor Hans Rudolf Lavater and his wife Anna Röuchli.   His early education was taken at a former convent school in Kappel (Kappel am Albis) in Zurich from 1545-47, he then studied theology in Strasbourg, Paris and Lausanne (a city on Lake Geneva, in the French-speaking region of Vaud, Switzerland), followed by a journey through northern Italy and Graubünden (a canton in eastern Switzerland known for its dramatic Alpine scenery and winter sports St. Moritz).  During his earlier stay at the Carolinum in Zurich (1543) he met his future father-in-law Heinrich Bullinger, and later married his daughter Margaretha Bullinger in 1550.

After his trip to Italy, Lavater was ordained in 1549 and started work as a pastor at the Zürcher Fraumündester (The Fraumünster Church in Zürich was built on the remains of a former abbey for aristocratic women founded in 853 by Louis the German for his daughter Hildegard).  Then for many years from 1550-1584 he held the office of archdeacon at the Großmünster (“great minster”, a Romanesque-style Protestant church in Zurich).  This was his most literary productive time period, during which he penned extensive interpretations of the Scriptures, wrote two sermons on the plague (1563), the biographies of his father-in-law Heinrich Bullinger, and Konrad Pellikan, both of whom had greatly influenced his own life, a story of the Lord’s Supper and a treatise on the liturgy of the Zurich Church.

In 1585, as the successor of Rudolf Gwalther, Lavater was appointed Antistes of Switzerlands churches.  (Antistes is from the Latin Language “anti “ before and sto “stand”, and from the 16th to the 19th century was the title for the head of all Reformed Churches in Switzerland).  This was the highest office in Switzerlands churches with synodal church governance.  However just a year after his appointment 1585, Lavater died from a brief but serious illness on the 15th July 1586.

Lavater’s theories on ghosts.

As a Protestant, Lavater rejected the idea of Purgatory (an intermediary place where souls of the newly dead that are destined to go to heaven, wait until they are pure enough to ascend) as an outdated Catholic concept.  This greatly complicated the idea of ‘ghosts’, often thought to be visitations by human souls that were not at rest, such as those who had died un-baptized or in tragic violent circumstances.  Without Purgatory, ghosts could only be visitations from Heaven or Hell.  Lavater felt they were more likely to have come from Hell, and this meant that many ghosts were demonic and their requests dangerous:  they could be trying to lure humans into damnation, for example by persuading them to commit murder or suicide.  He also allowed for the possibility of good ghosts – i.e. those arriving from Heaven as a representation of a dead person bearing revelation or advice – as well as suggesting that some ghost sightings were delusions, experienced by people suffering from melancholy or madness.  The Protestant rejection of Purgatory also made the subject of ghosts and their nature controversial and political, for it soon became part of the sectarian religious debate.
