Peter Binsfeld (c. 1540 – 1598 or 1603??) was a German bishop and theologian who became one of the main and prominent Witch-hunters of his time. The son of a poor farmer and craftsman, he was born in the village of Binsfeld, Germany, located in a rural Catholic region of the modern state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Considered by a local abbot to be a very gifted boy, he
arranged for Binsfeld to be sent to Rome for study. After his studies, he returned to his home region and became
active in the anti-Protestant Catholic activities of the late 16th century.
Later he served as the auxiliary bishop of Trier working under the
Archbishop Johann von Schonenberg during the infamous Trier Witch trials.
During the trials he became
one of the primary witch-hunters that accused and prosecuted some 306 persons
between 1587 and 1594. At the time,
the whole region was in the grip of a terrible blight on crops and the public
was more than ready to blame their troubles on the evil doing of Witches. At that time
in the Trier, even leading citizens were not immune from prosecution.
The chief judge, Dietrich Flade, was himself accused and burned at the
stake, as were two burgomasters and several councilors and associate judges.
Numerous clerics were ruined, and the children of the condemned were
stripped of all their belongings and sent into exile. This gave him a fierce reputation as a witch-hunter, but also inspired him to write about his experiences. His book Treatise on the Confessions of Evildoers and Witches (1589) became very popular and was widely circulated throughout Europe. He also wrote the influential treatise De confessionibus maleficorum et sagarum (Of the Confessions of Warlocks and Witches - Trier 1589), which was translated into several languages. In this he discussed the confessions of alleged witches and claims that even if such confessions were produced by torture, they should still be believed.

Binsfeld felt that people were too lenient when it came to dealing with witches, and that witchcraft was a crimen exceptum, which excused it from standard investigation methods. He was completely in favour of torture and in fact considered regular techniques to be too mild and not severe enough. Just one credible accusation of witchcraft should be enough to begin torture, and that it was perfectly acceptable to torture children. He also actively encouraged people to accuse family members, as by doing so they were saving their souls. He thought that girls under the age twelve and boys under fourteen could not be considered guilty of practicing witchcraft, but due to the precociousness of some children, the law should not be completely strict. This point of view can be considered as moderate, taking into account that some tribunals had condemned children between two and five years of age to be “burnt-at-the-stake”. Contrary to other authors of the time, Binsfeld doubted the ability of shape shifting and the validity of the diabolical mark. Not everyone believed Binsfeld’s extreme views, but there was little that they could do about it. Any dissenters were quickly denounced as heretical. One scholar from Trier called Cornelius Loos wrote against Binsfeld’s teachings, but later had all his writings and books confiscated, was forced into a recantation and imprisoned for doing so. In 1589 Binsfield published an influential list of demons, and was the first person to pair demons associated with the Seven Deadly Sins: Lucifer (pride), Mammon (avarice/greed), Asmodeus (lust/lechery), Satan (anger/wrath), Leviathan (envy), Beelzebub (gluttony) and Belphegor (sloth). Peter Binsfield is believed to have died in Trier, a victim of the plague sometime in 1598 or 1603. End.
